28 Nov My Lagos Adventure……
Hi there all,
So I have returned from my trip to Nigeria, my very first trip.
I can honestly say it was eye an opening trip, and also a very enjoyable one.
Firstly let me explain, Victoria Island is the heart of the city, it’s the financial district of Lagos, everything happens on the island, the elite lives on the island, money talks on the island……..
Then you have the mainland and rural areas, where majority of the people who work on the island travel from to get to work as that is where the money is….
There are huge constructions taking place in Victoria Island, it’s an attraction magnet for some of the biggest companies, Zenith Bank, PWC, and Marriott Hotels to name a few ……
Rural Lagos is very different, it’s a constant hustle, you do what you have to do to survive….. Because of this , crime rate is very high.
As with any third world country, there are just areas as that as a first time visitor you do not enter… It’s that simple, you stick to where you will feel safe around your hotel …..saying that some areas can never be safe, you just need to be vigilant.
Things I dislike about Lagos
* Traffic – omg it’s crazy here, the traffic is a killer, you can sit it traffic for 4 hours for a 2 mile journey , coupled that with the heat and irate drivers its ridiculous, but people travel in it everyday
* Power Cuts – if you don’t have a generator in Lagos you will die, the electricity goes off at least 5 times in an hour. As I was staying in an hotel, the power returned back in a few minutes as the generator kicked in, but I hate to think of the people living outside of Victoria Island and those that can’t afford a generator…….it’s not sexy!
*Internet Service – I am an Internet queen, but the mobile service is not great!, I survived however and was still able to tweet 😉
Things I like about Lagos
* Heat – the heat is excellent, however it can be brutal so small stages is recommended.
* Food – the local food is spicy and amazing, I also discovered Shawarma which is grilled Kebab to you and I 😉
* People – the people are very friendly , they have a constant smile even if they have hard lives.
Overall my trip was exciting and successful, I wish I had more time to explore Lagos and what it has to offer, however my time ended and I am sure I will be back again…..ever in the neighbourhood , pop over to Victoria Island, it a must see !
Until da next Tyme
