02 Jul Smoothies…..Good Reasons…..
Hey people,
So yes is that time again and I have started my drive to try and become healthy……..ok please note the operative word is try
With that in mind, I am great drinker, I will drink anything within reason, so in the interest of health , I was checking out what I can have as an healthy alternative…… Smoothies is the key!
So here are some good reasons as to why smoothies are a must :
1. Staying hydrated
Both yoghurt and milk contain lots of water, which your body will naturally draw out of them, so drinking a dairy smoothie means you won’t need to hydrate separately. The same can’t be said for coffee and other drinks you might reach for in the morning.
Top ingredient: Try adding coconut water as it’s rich in electrolytes, which are essential for hydration. It can also thin out the consistency if your smoothie is too thick.
2. Boosting energy
There are plenty of smoothie ingredients that can improve your energy levels in the morning. Yoghurt and honey both contain pantothenic acid, a B-vitamin that will help convert food into energy. Raw honey is also an excellent natural sweetener.
Top ingredient: Coconut oil contains medium chain triglycerides that will provide a boost of energy.
3. Keeping your brain healthy
Raspberries are a great source of antioxidants, which can help with brain and heart health. Ginger and parsley are equally benefitial, and are useful for adding taste. Orange zest too contains the important antioxidant limonene.
Top ingredient: Cinnamon also has antioxidant effects, and adding some to your smoothie will help normalise your blood sugar as well as lower cholesterol and blood glucose levels.
4. Getting enough proteins and healthy fats
Adding raw organic seeds such as flax, pumpkin and hemp seeds as well as nuts such as cashews and almonds will raise your levels of essential healthy fats and proteins. Proteins will help stave off morning hunger.
Top ingredient: Try adding a liquid essential fatty acid such as cod liver oil which can promote healthy skin. You won’t notice a teaspoon added to a smoothie, which is great if you have trouble taking it by itself for taste reasons.
5. Maintaining a healthy digestion
Increasing the amount of fibre in your diet is a natural and effective way to help your digestion, as well as remedy ailments like bloating and indigestion. Apples, strawberries, raspberries and mangoes are all great sources of fibre.
Top ingredient: Avocado has a mild taste and can add a creamy texture to a smoothie. A quarter of an avocado will add 80 calories and 3.4g of fibre.
Until da next Tyme!
